What you will hear
Alt beats in this library mostly run between about 80 and 120 BPM with low to medium energy and a lo-fi drum feel. The common thread is character: melodies and sounds that push you to rap differently.
How to use them
- Experiment with rests. Let the beat carry a bar while you stay silent, then come back in.
- Change your voice. Try a quieter, closer delivery, or a more melodic one.
- Write to the texture. Let the sound of the beat suggest the topic before you start.
If you get stuck in one flow on every beat, an Alt session is a quick reset. Pair it with the three-flow exercise in rap flow and cadence.
Keeping time when the beat is unusual
Some Alt beats have softer drums, odd textures or melodies that start in unexpected places, so the timing reference can be less obvious than on boom bap. Before rapping, spend a minute finding the most reliable sound in the loop — often a hi-hat, a rim click or a bass note — and count along with it. Rhyme Game's bouncing ball follows the beat's real grid, so in Practice mode you can watch the ball for the first few bars until your ear catches up.
If you still feel lost, choose an Alt beat at the slower end of the table and run only four or eight bars. Short runs on an unusual beat teach more than one long run where you drift for most of it.
Writing prompts for Alt beats
Because these beats have a strong character, they work well as writing prompts. Try one of these the next time you open an Alt beat:
- Describe the sound literally. What would this beat look like as a place? Write four bars set there.
- Change perspective. Write a verse from the point of view of an object in the room you are sitting in.
- Restrict the vowels. Use one vowel family for every end rhyme in eight bars, following the assonance guide.
- Leave space on purpose. Write a verse where every fourth bar is silent, and make the silence feel intentional.
Common mistakes on Alt beats
- Forcing your usual flow. The point of Alt is variety. If you rap exactly as you would on boom bap, you lose most of the benefit. Change at least one thing: where lines start, how long they are, or how loud you deliver them.
- Mistaking calm for slow. Seven of the eight DJ Maintain Alt beats are low energy, but at 88 BPM a bar is still under three seconds. Keep counting.
- Staying silent by accident. Leaving space works when it is a choice. If you go quiet because you lost the beat, run the same eight bars again with a planned rest instead.
- Skipping the comparison. The cluster of beats at 88 BPM is the most useful thing in this category. Comparing several beats at one tempo teaches you how much the sound of a beat shapes delivery.
The Alt beats, analysed
The 13 Alt beats come from two producers: eight from DJ Maintain and five from Bizzle Beats. All share the left field · experimental mood tag. The two groups have a clearly different profile, which makes the category more varied than its size suggests.
The DJ Maintain group — 80 to 93 BPM, mostly low energy
Nyara Day (80 BPM), then a cluster at 88 BPM — Decisions of the Moral Kind, Real Challenge Two, Saved Grade, Tenamin Kla and Torchlight Dreams — followed by One Seven Fives (90) and Burnt Grade Tea (93). Seven of the eight are rated low energy. The 88 BPM cluster is ideal for comparison practice: perform the same verse on three or four of them and notice how each beat's character changes the delivery that feels right at an identical tempo.
The Bizzle Beats group — 94 to 120 BPM, medium energy
Fresh Air (94), Internalise (95), Let Me Down (97), SHARP (98) and Roll The Dice (120). All medium energy and a little quicker. Roll The Dice is the fastest Alt beat at exactly two seconds per bar; the other four sit just under boom bap's median tempo.
A practice prescription for Alt
- Habit breaker (10 minutes). Pick any 88 BPM DJ Maintain beat. Rap 8 bars in your usual flow, then 8 bars where every line starts on beat two instead of beat one.
- Comparison run (10 minutes). Perform the same 8 bars on Saved Grade, Tenamin Kla and Torchlight Dreams. Write down which beat suited the verse best and why.
- Tempo step (5 minutes). Move to a Bizzle Beats track between 94 and 98 BPM and keep the same verse, trimming any line that makes you late.
An example that leaves space
Alt beats reward restraint. This original example leaves the third bar mostly empty on purpose, the same idea as an AA_A scheme in the game:
I was painting with the radio, the colours kept on changing,
every station had a different kind of weather it was making,
— (let the beat play) —
so I turned it down to hear the room and kept the brush from shaking.
The silent third bar makes the final line land harder. The multi-syllable rhyme (changing / making / shaking) holds an ay-ing vowel pattern across the section.
How long a alt session takes
A bar lasts 240 ÷ BPM seconds, so session length depends on which beat you pick. At this style’s median tempo of 90 BPM, one bar is 2.67 seconds, which works out to:
- 8 bars: about 21 seconds at 90 BPM (from 16 s on the fastest beat to 24 s on the slowest).
- 16 bars: about 43 seconds at 90 BPM (from 32 s on the fastest beat to 48 s on the slowest).
- 32 bars: about 85 seconds at 90 BPM (from 64 s on the fastest beat to 96 s on the slowest).
- 64 bars: about 171 seconds at 90 BPM (from 128 s on the fastest beat to 192 s on the slowest).
For a focused practice block, three to five 16-bar runs plus a warm-up fit comfortably into ten minutes on any alt beat. Longer 32- and 64-bar runs are best saved for days when you are testing stamina and breath rather than learning something new.

Are Alt beats good for beginners?
Yes, most of them are relaxed in tempo. They are less predictable than boom bap, which is good once basic timing is in place.
What tempo are the Alt beats?
Most sit between about 80 and 120 BPM, with low or medium energy. The table on this page lists each one.
